Lifespan of a slide:

Slides are essentially movie film stock (although processed differently) that are usually glued inside 2” x 2” cardboard mounts. Mounts can be made of plastic or metal and the mount size or film size might differ. However, you have two elements that can degrade. The most important is the film itself, You want to digitize to protect the film from fading, mold, mildew and discoloration. Fortunately, Kodachrome was the most popular slide film and we routinely see 60 year old Kodachrome slide film that is still nearly perfect. The other brands are usually far worse.
However, you also have to worry about the cardboard mounts. If those mounts begin to separate or warp, the process of digitization becomes very difficult and you could end up with a lot of $1 or more per slide fees that add up quickly. Because many of these slide mounts are from the 1960’s, we highly recommend getting them scanned right away to prevent the extra charges and less than ideal quality that could result.

We have professional organizers on staff to help you. We provide in-home organizing services throughout the states of California, Nevada and Utah. We also travel throughout North America to help organize larger collections. This personalized process includes labeling, dating and physically preparing your slides for digitizing and long-term storage. Our regular fee is $125 per hour, plus travel expenses. If you are located in our three state region, we provide up to three hours of organizing service at no charge with orders of $1000 or more.

What do I get back?

That’s a great question. First, we will return your original slides in archival packaging, ready for long-term storage. The digital copies will be organized in the order given to us and foldered as instructed. We recommend leaving the slides in their current packaging to help distinguish different groups of photos. You can write the name of the group on the box, bag or an index card and we will name the folder what you have written. This makes the collection easy to navigate and sensible to the people you share it with. We will make you one set of archival quality DVDs and you can also ask us to make you USB flash drives, hard drives and a cloud upload. We suggest getting clear on your end goal and talking this out with us before you start organizing.

Why Now?

If you are like millions of people across the US, then you or someone in your family still has a collection of old photographic slides stored somewhere, whether in boxes, carousels, sleeves or somewhere else.
With regard to all those old, precious and irreplaceable memories, two things are most important to keep in mind. The first is that the images captured on those slides and the materials they were made from simply will not last forever.
Natural fading has likely already occurred and the glue, cardboard and paper the images were mounted in will only last for so long. Simply put, without preservation the once-in-a-lifetime memories on those slides are in real danger of becoming lost forever.
The second most important thing to keep in mind is that there is a way to both preserve and once again enjoy the images on those slides utilizing today’s technology. That is, so long slide projector and screen, hello Facebook, email, text-message, Instagram, tablet, cell phone and PC!
